Four Races, Four Different Winners

NORA completed the fourth of five races on their 2011 schedule on Saturday night, and true to form, a different winner graced victory lane at Thunder Alley Speedway in Evans Mills.

The SBS division has been a very competitive division for years, as those who follow them are well aware. You can go on any given race night and not have a clue as to who will capture the checkered flag at the end of the night...the racing is that good, the cars that well-prepared and the drivers that competitive.

The 2011 season opened for the NORA SBS division at Thunder Alley back in April with Barry Kingsley winning the opener. Rob Pullen took the second race on May 7th and Sophomore sensation Mike Bruce captured his first-ever SBS points race on May 21st. Saturday night's racing saw veteran SBS driver Tim Barbeau add another feature win to his resume at the Northern NY track.

NORA will not race on August 13th at Thunder Alley, as it will be a much-needed weekend off for the drivers and teams unless it is a rain date for an Oswego Speedway makeup date. NORA will have one last race following the huge Classic Weekend at Oswego with a race in September at Thunder Alley; after Saturday night's racing, there are only 79 points separating the top 7 drivers in points...and as we all know, anything can happen on any given night. These 7 drivers are also all "perfect attendance" drivers...Rob Pullen, Vern LaFave, JJ Andrews, Mike Bruce, Pitt Watson, Barry Kingsley and Ivan Steen.

The points have been updated on the website below to reflect the current standings...so the race in September is going to decide this year's NORA champion. It is possibly going to be an "extra lap" affair, with NORA officials in discussions with the Thunder Alley officials on exactly how many laps will be run. As more information becomes available it will be posted here.

We are hoping that other SBS teams will join us at Thunder Alley for the season finale, and that fans will make the trip north to support the division.

New Feature Debuts on Website

You can now watch the SBS Heat Race from Thunder Alley on the website thanks to AJ Bernys and his team's in-car camera from the racing action of May 7th. Hopefully, AJ and his team will continue to do this so we can post some more "live" racing action for your enjoyment! Thanks to AJ for permission to post these videos throughout the season from both NORA and Oswego!

NORA RACES AT THUNDER ALLEY SATURDAY

The second race of the 2011 season for the NORA SBS division takes place this coming Saturday, May 7th at Thunder Alley Speedway (formerly Evans Mills).

2011 season open winner Barry Kingsley has the early points lead, followed closely by veteran dirt modified, SBS, Supermodified and asphalt modified driver Vern LaFave. LaFave is also one of the original members and organizers of NORA, getting the organization up and running more than 10 years ago. Sitting third in the points is another long-time SBS driver, Guard Nearbin, who is moving up to the Supermodified division at Oswego this season after purchasing the former Mike Casey ride. Gater Racing News columnist JJ Andrews rides fourth in the points, and rounding out the top five is Mark Castiglia, who has only been in the SBS division a few short seasons.

We hope to see you at Thunder Alley this Saturday for another "racing fix"! NORA takes the weekend of May 14-15 off as Oswego has its open practice day on the 14th, but we will resume racing again on Saturday, May 21st at Thunder Alley.

KINGSLEY TAKES 2011 OPENER

Barry Kingsley took the 2011 NORA opener at Thunder Alley Speedway last Saturday, following up on a successful 2010 season at Oswego that saw the veteran take his first ever feature win at the fast 5/8 mile lakeside oval.

Fourteen cars made the trek to Northern NY on a cool but sunny day. Heat race wins went to Tim Barbeau in the Abt-owned #50 and his owner Steve Abt driving his #85.

The feature started with Tim Barbeau and Mike Bruce tangling wheels when cars brake checked ahead of them; both went pitside and returned before the green flag flew again.

NORA also picked up two new sponsors this week- Inkspot of Oswego and #1 Speed of Watertown. #1 Speed will sponsor the NORA heat races, posting a $25.00 bonus for each heat race winner. Welcome aboard to our new sponsors, and thank you!

NORA's Commitment Program has begun to take shape, with 11 cars participating at this time, with more in the offing. You can see the complete listing of participants further down on the website.

NORA will once again take to the Thunder Alley asphalt this Saturday, May 7th, for a twenty-five lap feature race.

The NORA 2011 "KICKOFF PARTY" held yesterday at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego was, according to NORA officials, a ROARING success!

Kickoff to 2011 Tomorrow!

Hey...get off that couch, brave the weather and help support our SBS race teams! The NORA Kickoff Party is tomorrow, Saturday, February 12th from 1-6pm at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego.

There will be a great chicken BBQ, raffles for season pit passes, a ride in the 2-seat super, scratch-off boards, 50/50's and much more!

Local DJ Ronzo Gray and his Millennium Music will provide the entertainment.

All monies raised will directly benefit the NORA teams for 2011.

The 2011 opener is only 78...yes, 78...days away! You can check on how much time you have to get ready by looking at the new "THE COUNTDOWN HAS BEGUN..." clock at the top of the website. Weather depending, NORA drivers/teams could have TWO races to their credit BEFORE the Memorial Day opener at Oswego. What a great way to check out those changes made to your car before hitting the 5/8 mile home of the SBS...and a great way for rookies and veterans alike to get some needed seat time and shake off the winter rust. Get out and join NORA!

NORA ANNOUNCES 2011 LIGHTHOUSE LANES SBS RACING SERIES SCHEDULE & MORE

The Northeast Organized Racing Association has released their tentative schedule for the 2011 racing season, along with some other exciting news. Lighthouse Lanes, located on Shampine Drive in Oswego, has been a proud sponsor of the NORA SBS Series Race of Champions event for the past few years. For 2011, NORA is proud to welcome Lighthouse Lanes as a SERIES sponsor. Welcome, and thank you!

The season starts on Saturday, February 12th with a KICKOFF PARTY and chicken BBQ from 1-6pm at Lighthouse Lanes. Chicken dinners are $8.00 and entertainment will be provided by Ron Gray and Millennium Music. Several raffles will take place, with prizes including an Oswego Speedway Season Pit Pass, a ride in the
2 seat Supermodified,two $50.00 scratch-off lottery boards as well as 50/50 raffles and door prizes. Stop by for a great time and the best chicken BBQ in Oswego, provided by the catering staff at Lighthouse Lanes.

Thunder Alley Speedpark in Evans Mills, NY will host the first series race on April 30th. This longer distance event for the SBS drivers will be the first of 5 scheduled events at Evans Mills for 2011. Also, there is the possibility of an exciting mid-week event being added in mid-August. A sponsorship seminar will take place on Sunday, February 27th from 11am to 1pm, presented by Oswego Speedway announcers Roy Sova and Joe Marotta. This event is open to anyone interest in hearing Roy and Joe share their thoughts on sponsorship with their extensive marketing and sales backgrounds. The cost is $10.00 per person, and will be held at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego.

In other exciting news, our proposed "Commitment Program" for 2011 is shaping up quite nicely! Car owners who sign up will be rewarded for attendance at NORA events with an increased purse structure and a goal of increasing payouts by 50% or more. Commitment Program proposals will be available by the February 27th Sponsorship Seminar. Race teams also have an opportunity to earn more money each race night at Thunder Alley Speedpark by participating in the exciting "Open Wheel" class that pays at least $100.00 to start and $500.00 to win. Those who attended the season finale in 2010 at Thunder Alley saw the SBS cars take on the DIRT Mods and IMCA cars in an exciting race that had the fans on their feet!

PHOTOS NEEDED FOR WEBSITE!

Due to the fact that I am now 1300 miles away, I would like to ask all SBS teams to send me a photo of their car, with the 2011 paint schemes for use on the website.

When your car is completed and ready to "rock 'n roll" for this year, take a couple of pictures, preferably one side view and one frontal view, and send them to me in .jpeg format only to smd6658@hotmail.com with this information included: driver name, car number, what year racing in the SBS division (rookie,etc.), crew members, sponsors (if any), car owner (if different from driver), engine (ford, chevy, mopar, etc), contact email, and anything else you can think of that would be informational.

I would like to use these photos throughout the season, and do a "top 5" for each race result.

I may also try (depending on my availability due to work responsibilities) to send a quick questionnaire to different drivers and do a "profile" article on the website. Please be sure to include your contact email address with the pictures.

NORA GENERAL MEETING IS COMING UP!

The NORA General Membership Meeting will now take place Saturday, January 8th at 2:30 PM at Lighthouse Lanes. If you or anyone you know are involved with an SBS team for the 2011 racing season please plan on attending or letting them know. It will be a key meeting in organizing our fundraiser and announcing or Committment Program intentions, as well as a tentative schedule for the upcoming season.

New Year, New Logo, New Direction

The NORA blog now has a new look to go along with the new logo and the new direction the organization is taking for the 2011 racing season.

Also up and running is the new NORA presence on FACEBOOK. The link to the NORA FACEBOOK page is listed on the right side of the page, just under the 2011 officers/board list.

NORA General Meeting Elects 2011 Officers/Board

The NORA general meeting held on Saturday, November 13th, produced a new slate of officers, a new board of directors and a new committee to prepare for the 2011 racing season.

The new slate of officers include incumbent president Steve Reynolds once again leading the organization, with newcomers Craig Tyrell in the Vice President's seat and Jackie Bruce as Secretary/Treasurer. Sue Delong will continue as the Internet Coordinator for the organization.

The board of directors now consists of returning member Steve Abt, joined by sophomore owner/driver Chris Tedd; car owner Frank Bruce, veteran driver Tim Barbeau, and one of the original members of NORA, veteran driver Vern LaFave.

Looking to improve the marketing and sponsorship of the series has been a long-standing goal of NORA, and a new committee has been formed to meet those goals.
The Marketing/Sponsorship committee now consists of Chip Wood, Jo-Anne Rauscher and Dan Dennie.

NORA will shortly have a new internet presence, as a Facebook page will be created to help with the exposure of the Small Block Supermodifieds on the internet.

2010 NORA Finale Underway at Oswego

The 2010 racing season officially comes to a close today with the running of the annual Race of Champions marathon at Oswego Speedway.

The NORA SBS division is representing host Oswego Speedway with 16 cars in the field today.

Oswego Speedway 2010 SBS Track Champion Dave Cliff, Jr. has the potent #06 in competition as well as the backup Gnomey Racing #36 driven today by David LaTulip. Other Oswego regulars Mike Bond (26), Kreig Heroth (44), Jack Patrick (9), Rob Pullen (2), Dennis Richmond (77), Stan Gates (28), Chris Tedd (37), Dave Danzer (52), and Tim Barbeau (58) are joined by 2010 Oswego Speedway Supermodified Rookie of the Year Dave Gruel driving the Steve Abt-owned #85, Scott Schrader in the Nearbin #78, Pitt Watson back behind the wheel of the Watson Family #43, George Knight in the #1 for the first time in over a year and teenager A.J. Bernys in the newly purchased #24 (the former #50 of Tim Barbeau).

The first of two heat races went off without a hitch...Jack Patrick taking the first checkered of his 2010 racing season, which was cut short by an injury and subsequent surgery. He was followed across the line by Heroth, Cliff, Gruel and Richmond in the top 5.

Heat two started out with the 36 of LaTulip and 24 of Bernys coming together. Bernys exited the track on the hook, while the 36 continued on, minus the nose. Dave Danzer claimed the second checkered flag with Barbeau (58), Bond (26), Pullen (2) and Watson (43) chasing him.

The Small Blocks will be the first feature to run tonight, with the field lining up in this order:

52 Danzer, 06 Cliff
58 Barbeau, 2 Pullen
9 Patrick, 85 Gruel
44 Heroth, 26 Bond
77 Richmond, 43 Watson
28 Gates, 36 LaTulip
78 Shaffer, 1 Knight
37 Tedd, 24 Bernys

Lap 3 found the 24 of Bernys and the 1 of Knight getting together between turns 1 and 2; both cars went pitside with the 24 returning to the track but the 1 ofn.

Lap 12 saw the 24 bringing out the caution once again. The top 5 at this time were the 52, 06, 58,26 and 85.

Lap 14 brings disaster for leader Dave Danzer as he loses the right rear tire and ends up ofn.

Lap 20 sees the 36 of David LaTulip spin coming out of 3; keeps it off the wall and continues on his way. The 85 of Dave Gruel heads pitside for the remainder of the race. The top 5 as of lap 20 were the 06, 58, 26, 2, 44.

Lap 22 has caution flying again as the 77 of Dennis Richmond spins in turn 4; no contact and kept going.

No further problems ensued, and Dave Cliff, Jr. picks up the win of the 35 lap RoC feature. He was followed across the line by the 58 of Barbeau, Bond in the 26, Heroth's 44, Pullen(2), Richmond(77), Shaffer(78) and Watson(43). The complete finish is posted in the race results section below.

NORA At Thunder Alley Tonight

Thirteen cars made the trek to Thunder Alley, and with the exception of one minor spin at the start of heat one, the heats went off without a hitch.

A few items of news from the track:

Vern LaFave returns to the SBS division driving the car he originally drove at Oswego back in 1997/98, then sold to Steve Austin who campaigned it for several successful seasons at Oswego.

Ivan Steen, Jr. returns to the racing scene for the first time after sustaining some serious injuries in an opening night crash at Oswego. Welcome back, Ivan!

Bob Henry reassumes the seat in the Andrews #93 after missing Classic when owner JJ Andrews took over the reigns for the Labor Day race.

Dave Cliff, Jr. is driving the backup Gnomey Racing #36 this evening.

Chris Tedd returns to racing action tonight in his #37 after giving the ride to Supermodified driver Keith Gilliam for the majority of the Oswego season.

Rookie David LaTulip is filling in for regular driver Tim Barbeau in the Abt-owned #58 this evening.

Rob Pullen is back behind the wheel of his #2 tonight. I am thinking that Oswego SBS Rookie of the Year Mike Bruce was unable to get home from college this weekend.

Stan Gates is running his own #28 tonight.

With a large number of divisions on hand for the season finale at Thunder Alley this evening, the NORA SBS division will once again take the track for their feature somewhere in the vicinity of 8pm. The feature lineup looks like this:

NORA RACE TOMORROW NIGHT

The NORA Small Block Supermodifieds will take to the track for the last time this season at Thunder Alley in Evans Mills tomorrow night.

If you are in need of a racing fix since Classic Weekend, here is your opportunity to show up and support our Small Block drivers. SUNY-Canton is sponsoring tomorrow night's race at Thunder Alley, with discounted adult general admission tickets at only $5.00~yes, I said $5.00! They will also be discounting select concession items by $1.00...

Grab some friends, hop in the car and head north on I-81 past Watertown to exit 48, and get ready for some short track beatin' and bangin' as the SBS guys battle it out on the bullring of Thunder Alley!

The gates open at 3:30pm with warmups starting shortly thereafter, and racing begins at 6pm sharp.

Next weekend, the NORA SBS Touring Division will close out the 2010 season at the RoC at Oswego Speedway. More information will be posted here as its received.

NORA Finally Gets Show In

The NORA Small Block Supers finally got their first show of the season in at Thunder Alley this evening.

Ten cars made the trip north, and once again proved why they are some of the best short track racers around.

Heat race wins went to Guard Nearbin (78) and Dave Gruel driving the #58, normally driven by Tim Barbeau.

The feature started out with Pitt Watson in the Watson Family #43 spinning out before the green flag in some speedy dry put down during the previous race. After that, it was clean and green with the guys going green to checkered without incident.

Winning the feature was Gruel, followed by Steve Abt(85), Rob Pullen driving the Bruce #22 (formerly the Walker #68), Dave Danzer(52), Guard Nearbin(78), Mike Bruce(2), Brad Haynes(86), Ryan Crawford(37), Carl Crawford(7) and Pitt Watson(43).

The next NORA race will be on Saturday, September 18th at Thunder Alley.

NORA RACE TOMORROW NIGHT

NORA will once again try to get their race in at Thunder Alley tomorrow night. This will be the first race of the season, and I have been told that there is no threat of rain this time!

Gates open at 3:30pm and racing starts at 6pm. Don't forget...if you went up for the June 26th race, bring your wristband as they will be honored tomorrow night!

Pit passes for anyone that does not have a wristband are $20.00. Adult grandstand admission is $7.00.

As of this writing, the NORA race at Thunder Alley Speedpark is still on. Having just checked their website, there is no mention of cancellation even though there is light rain falling in the Evans Mills area. NORA OPENER RESCHEDULED!

The rained out June 12th NORA Opener at Thunder Alley (formerly Evans Mills) has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 26th according to NORA President Steve Reynolds.

June 26th is an off night at Oswego Speedway.

Thunder Alley runs 4 Cyl. thunder stock cars, 4 cyl. thunder stock trucks, 4 cyl. sport compacts, 4 cyl. light trucks and Thunder Alley Super Stocks on a weekly basis.

Added to their June 26th show besides the NORA Small Block Supermodifieds are a 50 lap enduro and Open Wheels. The Open Wheel division consists of DIRTcar style Big Block Modifieds, 358 Modifieds, Sportsman and IMCA.

Gates open at 3:30pm with racing beginning at 6pm.

The Oswego contingent will run a 25 lap feature at this track for the first time in 5 years...if you're needing some racing action and with Oswego closed, head on up Rte. 81 and watch the Small Blocks in action tonight!

NORA Season Opens Saturday!

The NORA SBS Touring Series will head north this Saturday, June 12th for the season opener at Thunder Alley (formerly Evans Mills) for a 25 lap feature event.

Gates open at 3:30pm with racing starting at 6pm. Adult grandstand tickets are $7.00 and pit passes are $20.00.

From Oswego and south: Take Route 81 North to exit 48 (Fort Drum); merge right onto Route 342 and go approx. 3.9 miles. At the intersection, turn LEFT onto Route 11 (there is a Microtel motel on the corner). Go approx. 4 miles (you will pass the main entrance to Fort Drum on the right and go past a Pizza Hut). Just after crossing over a railroad bridge as you go up the hill, the speedway is on the RIGHT (there is a turquoise colored water tower with "EVANS MILLS" on the left across from the track). Turn RIGHT onto STEINHEIMER ROAD and the track is on the right.

Some news and notes to start out the season.

Evans Mills has stepped up to host us for 3 shows this season. They will be paying our standard NORA purse of $500.00 to win, and $100.00 to start. We are currently working on confirming the USAC race again this year, and will notify you as soon as the USAC race date is confirmed. Also..we will notify you as to which night we will be racing as part of the Race of Champions weekend in September.

NORA has a mandatory $20.00 car only registration fee this season. We will be keeping record of points at all shows, and awarding an OWNERS CHAMPIONSHIP at the end of the season.

NORA will again be adhering to the 2010 Oswego Speedway rulebook. The only exception to this will be the tire rule. NORA will allow either the new 2010 compound or tires from last year.

Again this season, there will be NO HANDICAPPING. Each race will have a random draw for heat race starting positions, with the top finishers redrawing for feature starting lineups.

A copy of the information sheet regarding Evans Mills race on 6/12/10 is posted below, but you will receive a copy of this at Oswego on Saturday.

On Friday night, July 10th, NORA is having a fundraiser. This will be at the Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego, just down Shampine Drive from the speedway. The event will be from 8:30-11pm. The evening will include bowling from 9-11pm, pizza, door prizes, a LOTTO board raffle (will be $50.00 worth of scratch-offs)and 50/50 raffles.

The price is $15.00 per person.

Come on down and join the fun after the classic car cruise at the speedway! This is just one more great thing to do on what is shaping up to be one of the biggest racing weekends in speedway history!

Gruel Continues To Be Top Dog in NORA

Picking up where he left off after the 2008 RoC NORA race, David Gruel claimed the first checkered flag of the 2009 NORA season at Spencer Speedway last night.

15 cars made the trek to the Williamson oval for a big night of racing that also included the RoC Modified Tour and the regular contingent of Spencer divisions.

Three rookies made their NORA debut and all did very well. Oswego Speedway ROY candidates Mark Castiglia (90) and Dennis Rupert, Jr. (95) showed themselves to be equal to the task of running at a different track. Brand new driver Dennis Richmond, who crews for Steve Abt (85) at Oswego jumped behind the wheel of the Shawn Walker 68 for the evening as Shawn had a prior family commitment and also proved he could run with the pack.

Both heat races were made exciting, but for different reasons. Heat one saw eventual feature winner David Gruel make it 3 wide coming out of turn 4 on the inside of the 52 of David Danzer and the 58 of car owner Tim Barbeau, and the three of them raced nerf bar to nerf bar (to nerf bar) down the front chute and into turn 1before Gruel was able to pull ahead of the others. Heat two saw everyone on the first lap going down the back straight check up a bit going into 3, and with that, JJ Andrews slid up a bit to avoid the car ahead of him, but in the process Steve Abt, who was outside of Andrews caught a wheel, launching him up and out of the park, doing a scary looking sideways slide through the extremely wet grass way out into the field off turn 3. Andrews continued on, Abt took the ride back to the pits on the hook, but with a lot of quick work by the crews, was able to return to action for the feature.

The feature went clean and green for the first 18 laps. Two minor cautions for spins slowed the race a bit, but in the end, David Gruel was able to outrun second place David Cliff for the checkered.

At the finish it was Gruel, Cliff, Rob Pullen in the 25, first heat winner Jason Simmons (91) and the 23 of Barry Kingsley taking the top 5 spots. Rounding out the top 10 were Barbeau (58), Mike Bond driving the backup Pullen Deuce, Danzer (52), Jack Patrick (9) and Andrews (93) making his 2009 racing debut. The rookie contingent finished with Richmond (68) 11th, Castiglia (90) 12th and Rupert (95) 14th.

An added bonus from Lighthouse Lanes was announced during the drivers' meeting last night. Bob Hoefer added another $100 to be awarded to one of the drivers for the race. The LIGHTHOUSE LANES LUCKY DRAW would be awarded to the driver who finished in the position (1-15)that was drawn by NORA Announcer Roy Sova and NORA Vice President Sue Delong. That number was "concealed" until the cars and drivers were on the track for the feature. Roy announced that the winner of the extra bonus would be the second place finisher, who at the end turned out to be David Cliff, Jr.

NORA OPENS SEASON THIS FRIDAY

NORA will kick off the 2009 racing season this coming Friday night, June 19th at Spencer Speedway in Williamson, NY.

We would like to welcome Chris Porter of SBSRacingNews.com as our race sponsor for the evening.

This is a scheduled 25 lap event, and we look forward to a good field of cars as there is no racing at Oswego for the next two weeks. The schedule of events at Spencer for this week is huge! Besides NORA, the track will host the RoC Modified Tour for a 75 lap feature, along with their weekly modifieds(35 laps); Street Stocks (20 laps); Super Six (20 laps) and 4 Cylinders (20 laps). That is 195 laps of FEATURE racing alone!!!

If you are looking to get to the track and have never been there, take Route 104 West from Oswego and keep on going right into Williamson. The track is on the left after passing through the town.

Shangri-La II Race on June 27th Cancelled

George Swansbrough and the American Speed Association (ASA) are pleased to announce that the gates at the brand new Shangri-La II Motor Speedway will open on July 4th weekend. A test day, two days of racing, a pit party and fireworks are all scheduled for the track’s gala grand opening.

Action kicks off Friday, July 3, with a test and tune practice at the half- mile concrete oval. Gates will open at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, July 4, a special five division show will be scheduled, headlined by the ASA Late Models and the mighty Modifieds. Both main attraction divisions will do battle in 50 lap feature events.

The Sportsman Modifieds will feature a 40 lap main event, while the Street Stocks will do battle for 30 laps. Joining the action on grand opening night will be the Cup Lites Racing Series, with a 50 lap main event scheduled.

The speedway, conveniently located just off New York Rte. 17 Expressway (Nichols or Owego exits-see directions on Shangri-La II website) will give away FREE T-Shirts and prizes throughout the opening event weekend.

On Saturday evening, food and live music will fill the pit area as a pit party will take place allowing fans a “walk through” for a closer look at the new facility. Fireworks will also be featured to highlight the Independence Day inaugural celebration.

On Sunday, July 5, the action at Shangri-La II continues with Twin 50's for the ASA Late Models and a 100 lap event for the Modifieds. The always entertaining Sportsman Modified division will do battle in a 75 lap Feature and the Street Stock class will face off in a 50 lap main event. Special awards for will be given for Best Appearing Car, Hard Charger, Front Runner and Hard Luck. Anyone interested in sponsoring an award should contact the Speedway for more information. Starting times for the opening races will be forthcoming.

Shangri-La II Motor Speedway will NOT sit idle for the remainder of June just because events scheduled for June 21st and June 27th have been cancelled. Hoosier Tire testing will take place on Friday, June 19, at 6 pm. The cost of admission to the grandstands is $5.00 and will include entrance to Skyview Drags for the Friday Night Test and Tune. Additional Test and Tune practice dates, gate times and other information for the 2009 Racing Season will be released in the near future.

Race Fans are reminded that on Saturday, Aug. 1, the Tobias Speed STR's will invade Shangri-La II Motor Speedway for a huge 20 lap feature event. For all the latest news, check out the official track website at www.shangrila-2.com.

A Wild Beginning to the 2009 SBS Season

As Jimmy Buffett says, "It's five o'clock somewhere"....well somewhere in this world there had to have been a full moon, but its effects were shining directly on Oswego Speedway's 2009 season opener last night.

Twenty-two Small Block Supers were in attendance for the Port City 150, with the class scheduled to run 35 laps. The 3 heat races went off pretty much without incident as David Gruel, Tim Barbeau and David Danzer all picked up their first checkered flags of the season.

Then came the feature! Before the first lap was completed rookie George Knight, Jr. driving the #1 from the Stan Gates stable punched the first turn wall back end first ending his night with substantial rear damage. After the green flew again, and before the second lap was completed, Dave Danzer got twisted between 3 and 4, scattering the field but not before a number of other cars including 2008 SBS Track Champion Kevin Knopp, Jack Patrick and Guard Nearbin all came in on the hook. Patrick was able to restart a few laps later after the crew (with help from the other Hedger teams) made a lot of repairs. Knopp, and Danzer were not as fortunate as their nights were finished.

Another caution between turns 3 and 4 a few laps later saw Rob Pullen and Ken Pierce come together, with Pierce slamming the outside wall, scattering the foam and doing extensive front end damage. Shawn Walker avoided the melee, but as he slowed and went high to miss them, rookie Mark Castiglia came up behind him, lit up the brakes and took off the right rear nerf bar of the 68 before also hitting the wall nose first. Walker was able to continue, but the other three sat out the rest of the race in the pits.

Just after the midway point, Barry Kingsley, rookie Andrew Schartner and Shawn Walker all came together in between turns 1 and 2. Kingsley and Schartner received enough damage that they did not return to the racing surface. Walker, after pitting to check the right front shock, adjust the tow, and get the nose piece lifted off the ground (duck tape is a wonderful thing!) was once again able to return to the battle. He would pit once more on an ensuing caution (for the Brian Sobus car which threw up enough smoke to kill every mosquito within a 1/2 mile radius) and the team replaced the nose piece entirely as the car was starting to run hot.

At the checkers, it was David Gruel in the Tim Barbeau Enterprises #50 taking the first of the season, with "Gnomey" Dave Cliff, Jr. (06) in second; Russ Brown in the Pike #60 taking third; Mike Bond (25) fourth; and Shawn "Big Daddy" Walker (68) rounding out the top 5. Steve Abt (85), Jack Patrick (9), Jason Simmons (91), Guard Nearbin (78) and Brian Sobus (79) completed the top 10.

Six cars finished on the lead lap. The feature took approximately 1 hour to complete. There was 1 red flag situation (for the cleanup after the lap 2 incident). Less than 1/2 of the field were on the track at the checkered flag.

Hopefully, this was a case of opening night "rust", and that all the cars damaged will be able to return next week.

NORA BOARD MEETS, DISCUSSES 2009 SEASON

The N.O.R.A. officers and board met last evening to discuss the upcoming racing season.

President Steve Reynolds announced that NORA has secured race sponsorship from SBS Racing News and Chris Porter for our shows at Spencer Speedway, while Bob Hoefer and Lighthouse Lanes will return as the SBS sponsor for the RoC at Oswego Speedway in September. Jay Andrews of Andrews Auto will also become a sponsor of NORA this season. N.O.R.A. would like to thank these businesses for coming on board to help make this a successful racing season for the SBS division as they travel around the state to put on our usual competitive show for the fans.

In other news, membership dues were finalized. The registration fee will be $40 for drivers, and $10 for associate memberships (fans, crews, etc.). Registration fees will be due by the first green flag of the first race attended. You must be registered before you will be able to race. This includes the Race of Champions at Oswego, set to run on Saturday, September 12th. Membership forms will be available from Steve Reynolds (car #50/58 or Sue Delong (car #68) starting May 23rd at Oswego. If you attended the January 25th meeting at Lighthouse Lanes and filled out a form there, all you need to do is pay the fee.

The Shangri-La II race June 27th is still on their schedule although the track has yet to be completed due to construction delays caused by inclement weather. The last word according to their website is that the pouring of the racing surface will continue as weather permits. They have moved their start date back to the middle of June, the week before our scheduled appearance there. We will keep you informed as information comes in, so check here often for updates.

The tire rule for the SBS class @ Oswego was discussed, and the board has voted to waive that rule for the 2009 NORA season.

Two Fundraisers This Weekend

Ken Pierce and the #67 team will hold a Pulled Pork dinner at Lighthouse Lanes right after practice on Saturday, while on Sunday the Gates Racing Team #28 & #1 will host a golf tournament starting at 8am with a pig roast to begin at 11am in Palermo. Oswego Opener Postponed

Mother Nature is not a race fan! The opener at Oswego Speedway was postponed early this morning by track officials due to expected heavy thunderstorms this afternoon followed by a cold front moving into the area with sustained winds in the 35-40mph range with gusts of 50mph or more.

The next event at Oswego will be an open practice session next Saturday, May 16th, with free grandstand admission for fans.

The opening day will now be Saturday, May 23rd with the Port City 150 as the headline event. The MSA/Oswego winged supers will run a 40 lap feature, our own SBS teams will run a 35 lap feature, and the RoC Modifieds will run a 75 lap feature.

A nice showing for the SBS division yesterday for the open practice session. In attendance was Jack Patrick (9), Kevin Knopp (04), Barry Kingsley (23), Guard Nearbin (78), Dennis Rupert (95), Mark Castiglia (90), Dave Danzer (52), Ken Pierce (67), Gregg Davis (68), Tim Barbeau (58), Dave Gruel (50), Bill Moore (20), Steve Abt (85), Rob Pullen (25), Mike Bond (26), and Dave Cliff (06). Making an appearance in the TMS backup Pullen Deuce was Chip Wood.

I spoke with both Mark Castiglia and Dennis Rupert after the practice session was over, and they both indicated that they were planning on running the NORA series this season, which is great for both the division and NORA appearances at Spencer, Shangri-la and the RoC. Both also told me that they had been encouraged to run NORA by former SBS (now Supermodified) driver Lou LeVea, mainly for the extra "seat time".

It was good to be back at the track, and definitely looking forward to Oswego's opener next Saturday!

SBS Driver Roster

Judging by the looks of the SBS driver roster on the Oswego Speedway website, its going to be an interesting mix of old and new drivers. Some have given up the "owner/driver" title to become "driver only"; some have become "relief" drivers, and some have added another car or cars to their racing stable.

There are by my count at least 5 rookies this year, so the SBS Rookie race will be quite interesting.

Adding cars to their stable (or combining teams) are Balance Motorsports, with Steve Abt (85) and Bill Moore (20) joining forces, along with the new #58 that is now owned by Steve Abt and will be driven by Tim Barbeau...

Stan Gates (#28) has added another car (#1) to his team which will be driven by rookie contender George Knight, Jr. ...

The potent Gnomey Racing 06 team has added another car (#36) to their roster, mainly to be available as a backup for Dave, but there may be another driver (look for it to be in the "Hoosier Mama 8 race as it was auctioned off at Luther's Make A Wish party in March)...

Rookie Andrew Schartner will take over the reins of the #18 Crow Motorsports SBS as long-time driver Dave Gruel moves to the Barbeau #50 for 2009. Tim put Dave in the seat for the RoC race at the end of last season, and a partnership was formed. Tim had decided to put the helmet away (at least for a while) and just be an owner, but the opportunity to drive the former Muroski #38 (now #58) was too good to pass up...

Russ Brown, many time track champion in the SBS series will return in 2009 in the #60 that he drove toward the end of last season...

Pike Racing (#61) is on the roster, but no driver listed...

Chris Natoli will return to the speedway in the #33 after taking last season off...

Big Daddy Shawn Walker will be campaigning for re-election as Oswego's Fourth Ward Alderman, and has a number of family commitments to attend to this summer, so he has added former Classic and feature winner Gregg Davis to the #68 team as a relief driver. Gregg will bring out the car for the 5/2 open practice session, and will be in the car when Shawn is unable to drive...

Rob Pullen has left the "owner/driver" mantle behind and will pilot the second TMS car owned by Terry Solazzo. Rob will drive the #25 that was driven last season by Rick Ziegler, and will be teammates with perennial threat Mike Bond...

Two more rookies will debut opening day in the SBS division...Mark Castiglia in the #90, and Dennis Rupert II in the #95.

Three SBS teams were in attendance at this year's Gator Motorsports Expo at the NYS Fairgrounds. Thanks go out to the Barbeau #50 and driver David Gruel, Balance Motorsports #85 and driver Steve Abt, and Solazzo Motorsports #25 and driver Rob Pullen. As usual, the SBS "finest" and the cars are very sharp looking! Especially cool is the nose piece on the #85 of Steve Abt...you can see a picture of it here. All of the cars were located in the Oswego Speedway booth.

Hot off the internet...President Steve Reynolds has just announced that NORA has a second race at Spencer Speedway on Friday, July 17th. In case anyone is wondering..it is a regular race night at Oswego on the 18th.

Also: NORA will have a presence at the upcoming Gator Motorsports Expo next weekend. We will have a table set up near the Oswego booth with some of the SBS cars that will be in attendance.

Tomorrow, Saturday, March 7th is the 9th annual Luther's Make A Wish party. It is from 2-8pm at the Oswego Moose Club, with music to follow until 2am.

There are lots of items up for auction, so come early and bid often! This year will see Luther reach his goal set 9 years ago of reaching $100,000 for this wonderful charity.

Another Race Date Confirmed!

This message was received from NORA President Steve Reynolds today:

NORA has confirmed our "make-up" date at Shangri-La II Speedway. We will be racing there on Saturday night, June 27th. If you have been following the blog, or attended the meeting on 1/25, you know that we had originally scheduled a race at the new Southern Tier track on the Saturday after Classic. With the RoC move to that weekend at Oswego, we contacted SLII and Barry and track rep. Amy Stilson worked to find a date that would fit into the already announced Oswego schedule. The members in attendance at the January meeting had no objection to this date, and it has worked out to our advantage.

In other scheduling news, Barry is still working with the Dunn Tire Park Raceway (Lancaster) on a date there, and Steve is in contact and working with AIS for a date there. There is also the possibility of a second show this season at Spencer as well as a date at Chemung Speedrome.

Spencer Date Confirmed!

Just had an email from NORA President Steve Reynolds stating that the NORA show at Spencer Speedway for Friday, June 19th is confirmed. After the recent press release from the RoC stating that they were running a modified show there on that night, it was a bit of a concern for us, wondering if we would loose that date. Steve spoke with John White, owner of Spencer today, and our date has been confirmed. We will run a 25 lap feature, and the Modifieds will have a 75 lap feature along with the regular Spencer divisions. It should be an awesome night of racing, and a chance to showcase our division in front of a huge crowd...we all know that the Mods always bring a good crowd with them!

More news on the schedule front as it becomes available, so stay tuned right here for the first word on NORA, 2009!

Membership Meeting 1/25/09 Notes

The membership meeting this morning was well attended, and they received a lot of news and information from President Steve Reynolds and Board member Barry Kingsley.

The first order of business was the election of officers and board members for the 2009 season (the results are posted on the sideboard of the blog). After that, Steve got right down to business.

The schedule was first on the agenda. We have one firm date (6/19) at SPENCER SPEEDWAY, with www.sbsracingnews.com as a sponsor for that race. Thanks to Chris Porter for coming on board and supporting NORA! Barry Kingsley and Jay Andrews recently had a meeting with John White, owner of both Spencer and Chemung, and he was very glad to have us again this season with the possibility of a second race there as well. It pretty much sounds like we just have to give him a second date at this time. The race at Spencer will be 25 laps, a $35 pit pass, and a purse from the track.

Steve has also been in contact with Mr. Lydecker from ADIRONDACK INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY. He is very interested in having the SBS series at AIS, however his schedule is still in progress, but we will be in contact again soon. He did offer us a Friday night race (7/31) in conjunction with the CAMPING WORLD EAST SERIES of NASCAR, but as its the night before the MR. SBS race at Oswego, it was turned down for fear of low car count. Another date that was discussed was June 27th as Oswego is closed for graduation. The membership present was not adverse to that idea, so it will be discussed further with AIS.

As posted on the blog yesterday, the ROC race at Oswego is now the weekend after Classic, with the SBS series to run on Saturday, Sept. 12. This will be a 35 lap feature, with owner/promoter Andrew Harpell again offering the same purse--$4500 for a 24 car field.

After the RoC announcement, Barry was in contact with Amy Stilson at SHANGRI-LA II SPEEDWAY, as we had previously scheduled a race that night with them. Amy stated that they are looking at their schedule to see where they can fit us in. A list of possible dates was given that don't conflict with the Oswego schedule. She said she will get back to us ASAP. June 27th is a possible date there, among others.

CHEMUNG SPEEDWAY is another possible race date if we can get a schedule for both Shangri-La and Chemung on a Saturday/Sunday AFTER CLASSIC.

As mentioned before, NORA has obtained sponsorship for both the Spencer race and also a sponsor for the RoC. Andrews Auto is also coming aboard as a business sponsor in 2009. Thanks, JJ!

Discussed was the possibility of a fundraiser of some type to assist with expenses and increase the purse/points fund. More on this as it unfolds.

All races will pay $500 to win, with $100 to start the feature. We are looking at raising $1000 minimum between fundraisers, membership fees and sponsorships for a points fund. A long discussion regarding points--driver or owner--took place with many great ideas coming forth. It was decided that we would utilize the Eagles Fan Club plan; monies paid evenly to owners who support the series at every race would get a certain amount; then decreasing in proportion to owners who are present less than the full series of races. Drivers will be awarded trophies for the top places. Race lineups will be decided by a draw for heat races, with the top half of the drivers redrawing for feature starting positions. This will be done at EVERY race.

A MEMBERSHIP DRIVE will take place soon; the officers and board will meet shortly to decide the membership cost; there may be a discount if you sign up before May 1.
Registration will be for the CAR only, instead of owner and driver as before.

Tech was also a topic of discussion. It was put forth that if we can get the track tech people to do it, we will. It was suggested that if we cannot do this, we have a committee of 3-5 NORA people do this. If anyone on the committee is involved in any way with a top 5 finishing car, they would abstain from tech that night and another person would be selected. A suggestion was put forward re: a list of pre-determined items to be inspected that would be made available to the tech people prior to the start of the feature. That will be taken under consideration. Mike Bozzuto and Brenda Rice were both present at the meeting today, and were approached about the possibility of helping in this matter; both said they would consider it. The rule book for NORA will remain the same as Oswego Speedway. That concluded the NORA meeting. Look for more information to be posted here as the season gets closer.

Tom Aaserud spoke after the NORA meeting regarding the Oswego Speedway/SBS relationship. He has been in contact with Steve Gioia regarding some issues, and he presented them to those in attendance.

The first item discussed was a 2-TIRE RULE. One big item of note: there is available for purchase a scanner that will scan the barcode on the side of each HOOSIER tire. This would allow for considerable monitoring of the 2 tire rule as each tire would be scanned and assigned to a specific car, and would be a big money saver for the teams. If it was found that a tire was on a car NOT assigned that tire, it would result in a penalty of $100 and 10 championship points taken away. After much discussion among those present, it was decided that purchasing the scanner would be looked into, and it would be kept and monitored by someone affiliated with the SBS division ONLY. Also discussed was the "lenient" penalty; it was suggested that the penalty be more points taken away and a disqualification for the night.

Mike Bozzuto spoke about TENTATIVE rule changes as put forth by the speedway:

1). BELTS. The new polyester silver belts from Simpson have a 5 year usage. The nylon belts are good for 2 years only. UV rays, weather, etc. do damage to the nylon.

2). TOTAL WEIGHT. The speedway is becoming much more strict regarding the enforcement of this rule. The SBS total weight is 2350lbs. If a car is found to be either too light or too heavy, a fine, DQ or both will be enforced. The same will occur if a car is found to be over the 57% Left Side Weight rule.

3). CUBIC INCHES. The tech inspectors will be doing much more testing and checking of this issue.

4). INSPECTION HOLE. The 1" inspection hole is mandatory; if not present, the tech inspector will REQUIRE THE BELLY PAN BE REMOVED.

5). CARBUREATORS. The legal carb. is 44/12. If a carb. is found to be illegal, it will be removed, and possibly confiscated, along with other penalties. The rules regarding this will be STRICTLY ENFORCED!

6). TIRE SOFTENER. Here is the big one, folks! If a team is found with tire softener on their tires, it will be a MANDATORY ONE YEAR SUSPENSION! Tech inspectors will be checking all tires every week.

The last item of business was asking for representatives from the SBS division to participate with the speedway. Tom had ballots distributed, one for each team, to make a nomination for 2 people that would be able to work in a professional manner with speedway officials for the betterment of the SBS series. If anyone would like a ballot who was not present, contact Debbie Bond at the track, as she has them now. Ballots will need to be sent back to Debbie no later than February 12, 2009. When she has the names of our new reps, she will notify us, and that information will be posted here.

59th Annual Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend Set for September 11th, 12th and 13th at Oswego Speedway. Modified 200 to Highlight Sunday Racing Card.

BINGHAMTON, NY…The date is set for the 59th running of the Sunoco Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway. The prestigious Modified 200 will take place on Sunday, September 13th at the historic 5/8 mile oval. The Modified 200 will culminate a huge weekend of racing that will satisfy the greatest racing appetites.

The weekend will get underway on Friday morning with an open practice session for the teams competing over the weekend. On Friday evening the intensity will grow for the annual SST Modified 100. The SST stars will be joined by the annual Mini Stock open and Factory Stock event on that evening. Qualifying on Friday will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Saturday will serve as a huge day of racing as well with qualifying to get underway at 1:00 p.m. The Late Model teams will have their opportunity to shine with a major 150 lap event slated for that day. The main pit road will be utilized for the Late Model teams so they have an opportunity to showcase their talents. The NORA SBS Super Modifieds will compete in a full program along with a 35 lap feature and qualifying for the annual Super Stock Championship will take place. The SST Modifieds teams that failed to make the Friday night 100 will have their shot in a non-qualifiers race as well.

For open Modified fans Saturday night will get things warmed up prior to Sundays Sunoco Race of Champions 200. The first Modified All-Star Winners Classic race will be a highlight of Saturdays racing card. A 30 lap special event will feature all of the 2009 RoC Qualifier race winners in an event to determine guaranteed starting status for the 200. The top five finishers in this race will be locked in to the field for Sundays 200 lap event. RoC Qualifying events will be held at speedways throughout New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and the New England region. Fans can be assured the best will be in competition on Saturday night.

All of the focus will shift to Sunday, September 13th with the 59th running of the Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200. The 200 lapper is scheduled to take place at 2:00 p.m. The Modifieds will be joined with only the Super Stock 75 lapper on that day so that spectators and teams can arrive back home in a reasonable time frame on Sunday.

The Modified 200 is expected to be the only event for the Modified teams in the northeast on that day. All of the top names of Modified racing will have the opportunity to compete for the 59th RoC title. Once again the winners share will be a minimal of $10,000 and with incentive lap fund money that total could easily soar over $20,000.

Race of Champions owner Andrew Harpell commented on the exciting new format, “We wanted to present the race fans with a huge weekend of racing at Oswego. We are thrilled to provide all of the top Modified teams an opportunity to once again put their name on the Al Gerber Memorial Trophy.” “We are also in discussions with Pat Furlong and Steve Gioia (Oswego Speedway owners) to offer some incentive race fan packages between the Classic Weekend and Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend.”

Defending Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour Titlist Matt Hirschman remarked on the new format, “The scheduling date will make the event a true Race of Champions this season with the best in the business able to participate again.” He added, “This is one event that I really want to win and just having the opportunity this season will be special for our race team.”

Tickets will go on sale in late April for the Race of Champions weekend with further scheduling details to be released shortly. The NORA Small Block Supers are moving toward a successful 2009 season, that could involve as many as six races. A very important general membership meeting will take place on Sunday, January 25th at Lighthouse Lanes at 11am. Many subjects will be discussed with the members, including schedule, purse and election of officers.

NORA is working on a schedule that compliments the Oswego Speedway schedule to make it conducive for the teams that will be racing for points on NORA and at Oswego Speedway. Recent discussions have secured dates for two races, while negotiations are still ongoing for as many as four more events. So far, a tentative Friday, June 19th date has been set for Spencer Speedway, and a Saturday, September 12th date has been secured for the new Shangri-La II Speedway. Also, NORA may return to Adirondack International Speedway during the 2009 season. A recent meeting with John White, owner of both Spencer and Chemung Speedways was productive regarding a possible race at Chemung Speedway, as well as a second race at Spencer Speedway. It is also very likely that NORA will once again appear at the Race of Champions, held at Oswego Speedway in September. Sponsorship discussions are proceeding very well and it is expected that a complete schedule will be released by the end of January.

Also for 2009 NORA will have a new site on the web: http://norasbs.blogspot.com/. This will be the official blogsite for NORA so check here often for more news. This site is still under construction, as as the season progresses there will be more features added. As you may also notice, there is a message board that is available for anyone to utilize, but you will first have to register as we want to make it a more pleasant experience for everyone. You can also keep up with all the latest SBS news by visiting one of our sponsors for 2009 at www.sbsracingnews.com.
